The Day of Days

It’s morning. Many of us are just waking up, hopefully after sleeping peaceably for several hours. We grab our coffee, maybe scan the newspaper, and then spend some time reading scripture. We pray. We think about the coming weekend and all the plans we have with our families. For most of us, today will be another relatively comfortable day in a long series of relatively comfortable days. But it was not that sort of day for our Lord on the first Good Friday.

During the hours we slept, much had already happened to him. Sometime late Thursday evening, perhaps around midnight, he was in the Garden of Gethsemane.  He was struggling. He knew what was before him. He asks, “may the cup pass,” but he wants the will of the Father more. He knew he came into the world for this.  Before the world was created, he knew this was his purpose. To love us. To die for us. All while he should have been sleeping. Like us.

Then he is betrayed. A kiss from a “friend” is just the first of many slaps in the face over the coming hours. His other friends scatter. Jesus is alone. For you.

Jesus finds no sleep for his tired body. Rest may only be found in the Spirit that he shares with his Father. Before the sun rose he already had three hearings before the Jewish authorities. The interrogators ask questions but want no answers. More slaps. Punches. Due process is nowhere to be found. Zealots of the law are now lawbreakers. The Son of God, maker of heaven and earth, is spit upon. Humiliated.  For you. So you could sleep soundly this Friday morning.

Meanwhile, prophecies are being fulfilled. Peter, the rock, crumbles in fear before a little girl. Three times he denies him who he swore he would never deny. Three times the rooster crows. Humiliated and ashamed, he runs away in tears. And Judas, the betrayer, betrays himself. Thirty pieces of silver hit the ground, while his body swings from a tree.

All while we were sleeping. And that awful, beautiful day has just begun.

After 6 am our Friday morning routine begins. We drive to work. It’s a very ordinary day.  But we get easily frustrated. Traffic. Potholes. Confusing construction zones. We look forward to resting this weekend.

On Good Friday, Jesus’ morning commute was much different. His accusers take him from the Sanhedrin to Pilate’s headquarters. Lies are told. Pilate finds no guilt in him. Of course, he doesn’t. Jesus is blameless. But we are guilty, and he stands in our place. So the charade pretending to be a trial must go on.

Pilate, passing the buck, sends Jesus off to Herod. It’s been hours since the Last Supper. No one cares that he hasn’t eaten breakfast. Has he even had a drink of water? But we get a moment to enjoy a latte and a scone from Starbucks.

Herod, the clown whom men made king, now mocks the King of Kings. More lies.  Satan smiles. They take him back to Pilate. Jesus, full of grace and truth, stands before a man who is blind to truth. Pilate asks the mob who they choose. “Give us Barabbas!”

The agony starts. The Roman whip is efficient in its work. Flesh is ripped from muscle. Muscle is separated from bone. Every stripe he receives buys our grace.  God who became flesh is now being tortured. The innocent in place of the guilty.  All for us. A crown of thorns is now on His head. The blood of the spotless, sacrificial lamb seeps through a purple robe. Again, Pilate finds no guilt in Jesus.  But any courage Pilate may have he washes away. “Crucify him!”

The final part of Jesus’ Good Friday “commute” begins. It’s maybe a half-mile to the Place of the Skull, Golgotha. The way is steep and rocky. So much blood. Our savior is already dying. The large cross is so heavy. But it is the weight of our sins that crushes him most. All this…for us. All before 9 am on Good Friday.

We need a break from our Friday meetings, so we settle into the restaurant with our friends for lunch. We poke fun at each other, but not so much that anyone gets their feelings hurt. After lunch, the Easter outfits are picked up from the cleaners. A phone call is made to our parents to check on them. We look forward to ending the day early.

Jesus can take no break from his labors. His wounds on his back from the Roman whip become embedded with splinters from the wood of his cross. The nails in his hands and his feet have pierced bone. Horribly, he must use the nails in his feet as leverage to push his body up so that he can catch his breath. Jesus is slowly suffocating. The cross smothers him as completely as our sin smothers us.

The mockery continues. Pharisees laugh. Soldiers wager over his clothes. Those passing by on their way into Jerusalem assume Jesus is a criminal who is getting what he deserves. No. He is getting what we deserve. Even a thief beside him mocks him. But another thief is promised paradise. Mary looks up at her son on the cross. John sees his best friend dying. Jesus knows his friend must now care for his mother.

More laughter. “He saved others; he cannot save himself. Let the Christ, the King of the Jews, come down from the cross that we may see and believe.” But Jesus will not save himself because he wants to save us. Ultimately, it is love, not nails, that holds him to the cross. The darkness that reigns in men’s hearts now darkens the sky. “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” And Satan thinks he is winning.

All this is for you.  And it is just noon on Good Friday.

It’s nice to quit work early on a Friday. What’s left undone can be picked up again next week, right? So we head home, maybe running a few errands along the way.  We have our plans. We have all the time in the world. We have some momentary thoughts about the Good Friday service and Easter. But those brief thoughts of Jesus are quickly choked out by everything else happening in our lives right now.

The greatest event in cosmic history is now coming to an end. Jesus, laboring for hours on the cross, is near death. The most searing pain of this awful day has arrived. It’s not the physical pain that hurts most. It is the pain of his soul bearing the weight of our sins. We are with our family and friends, but Jesus is alone.  Suffering. Dying. For us. “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

The moment of our atonement has now come. All the wrath of a Holy God at every single sin ever committed or will be committed by us…from the first taste of the forbidden fruit until the last sin at the end of time…all that wrath is heaped onto the Son of God and nailed with him to his cross. It crushes him. “It is finished. Into your hands Father I commit my spirit.”  Jesus takes his final breath. And he dies.

Calvary is now in chaos. Earthquake. Is he really dead? From a spear in the side flows blood and water. Now the soldiers finally see. “Certainly this man was innocent!” “Truly this man was the Son of God.”It’s all over by Friday afternoon. Our redemption has been purchased, and the veil is torn in two. Grace is given. And our savior is dead. Hanging on that tree. All this…for us.

Remembering 9/11…

“So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison.” 2 Cor. 4:16-17

In much the same way that an older generation remembers where they were when JFK died, many of us remember where we were on 9/11.

At the time I was an attorney with a company that had offices throughout the country. We watched the television as the Twin Towers evaporated against a clear-blue sky, wondering if anyone we knew just lost their lives. (Later we learned that some of our employees working at a client’s office did die in one of the towers.) We spent the rest of that day tracking down employees who were traveling to make sure they were safe, and arranging rental cars for them to drive back to Arkansas due to the nationwide suspension of air travel.

War came to America on 9/11. The first combatants in this new war were airline employees and passengers. Firefighters and police officers joined their ranks soon afterwards. “When others ran out of the buildings, they ran in.” And in the weeks and years that followed, hundreds of thousands of men and women in our armed forces put themselves in harm’s way as instruments of God’s common grace to defeat evil in this world. Flag-draped coffins and wounded warriors bear witness to their valor. Lest we forget, the war still continues and their numbers steadily increase.

Eighteen years later, 9/11 has changed us. While our nation has always known conflict and often experienced tragedy, since September 11 we feel more vulnerable. Before, we were fortress America. Now we live with the fear that maybe it could happen again. Boston, San Bernardino, Orlando, Paris, etc. all bear witness to the fact that we are not as safe as we once thought. Many wonder if we will ever return to the “normal” of pre-9/11.

“So we do not lose heart…”

Ground Zero has recovered since 9/11. It’s no longer the smoldering heaps of mangled steel that we saw in late 2001. Today it’s brimming with life. All around the site you see the hopeful determination of New Yorkers to reclaim their city from the destruction caused by evil men who flew airplanes into buildings. In place of the destroyed towers, new buildings now soar high into the skyline of lower Manhattan.

Throughout the memorial plaza where the towers once stood, dozens of trees have been planted. All of them are swamp white oaks, except for one pear tree. That one pear tree has become known as the “survivor tree.” It was originally planted at the plaza in the 1970’s and was all but destroyed in the 9/11 attack. A broken and burned 8-foot mess, it was taken to a nursery in the Bronx where it was slowly restored to health. Today the tree has grown to a height of over thirty feet. Yet it still bears the scars of that awful day. When I visited the site a few years ago, I could not take my eyes off of it. In spite of its scars, or maybe because of them, I thought the tree was beautiful.

In so many ways we are each like that survivor tree. The evil of this world has left us a broken and burnt mess. Some of that evil was done by us and some of it was done to us. Regardless, without the tender touch of the master gardener, we will perish. But his loving grace does heal us and restore us.

In 2 Corinthians 4:16 Paul encourages the church at Corinth, and us today, to not lose heart. And then in verse 17 he assures us that whatever is happening today that troubles us is light in comparison to the beautiful glory of God that we behold through our faith in the Gospel. What Paul is saying is that our suffering and losses prepare us for something better.

Through the grace of God, suffering is redemptive. God takes the bad and makes it something glorious. Our security then is not in avoiding bad things. Who can do that in a fallen world? Our security is God’s plan for redemption through the Gospel that has been accomplished by Christ and guaranteed for us by the Holy Spirit.

In Revelation 21:5, Jesus promises that he is making “all things new.” New in this context isn’t new in the sense of first coming into existence. Instead, new means that its qualities are so different than what it was like before that it has indeed become “new.” It is this transformation that glorifies God because we remember what a sad state it was in before. And that is what the Gospel does: Glorifying God through the redemption and restoration of a creation damaged by the Fall.

As we remember 9/11 and honor those who lost their lives on that day and since, my prayer is that we will not lose heart, but instead know that in the middle of a world broken and bleeding from the Fall, God’s promises are still true, that in Christ we are forever secure and always kept by the Holy Spirit, and that no loss we suffer is ever wasted in the economy of God. All of it will eventually bring him glory and be a gracious instrument for our transformation.

The Gospel & How We Grow

Our culture has lots of approaches to helping people change. Pick a topic, do a quick search online and you will see thousands of suggested ways to overcome a struggle. We all have our approaches. Do you want to know what your own personal “theology” of change is? Easy. When you see someone caught in a struggle, how do you complete this sentence: “If only they would __________”? Whatever you fill in the blank with exposes how you think people change.

Many of us fill in that blank with something like “try harder.” This is essentially the morality-based approach to change in which discipleship strategies are aimed at equipping us to understand God’s commands to live rightly, and then we should simply do what is expected of us. In fact, the word “should” shows up a lot in this approach. Growth is equated with obedience and measured based on performance (usually in pass/fail terms). The role of a disciple-maker in this strategy is similar to being a boss – communicate expectations and point out needed correction. The Gospel rarely shows up in this approach beyond a type of gap-filler that bridges the difference between our performance and God’s expectations. This try harder strategy often leaves us utterly defeated and ashamed.

Others embrace the therapeutic approach to how people change. In fact, this may be the most popular model for our churches today. Under the therapeutic approach we try to understand how our life experiences shape or misshape us and contribute to our own dysfunctional behavior (which is rarely called sin). Our role in the therapeutic model is to apply wisdom principles (usually a blend of man-centered approaches and biblical proof texts) to enable us to overcome our problems. Growth comes about with “break-throughs” and deeper insight into you, with our disciple-makers acting like quasi-therapists (or the more popular term “life coach.”). The therapeutic model focuses on felt needs and wants you to become a better you. It tends to celebrate confession without ever leading to repentance. Like the morality-based approach to change, the therapeutic model puts you in the driver’s seat. The Gospel is applicable only in a general sense. We have the good news of God’s love but no bad news that brought about our need for good news in the first place.

Still another other approach calls into question the very idea of spiritual growth, seeing growth as something that may or may not even happen. This is the hyper-grace “let go, let God” approach. The focus here is on God’s unconditional approval of us as we are, without regard to whether we ever change. This approach may mention the grace of God, but it is a very anemic grace that rarely calls a man or woman to come and die. It espouses a half Gospel that justifies but never empowers us to be sanctified.

Each of these approaches has some parts that are true. God’s Word does indeed give us a template for living, and throughout scripture there are numerous exhortations for us to engage in personal effort to live rightly. And it is also true that the wounds we receive from the sins of others affect us and can shape our own sin tendencies. And it is also true that, in Christ (an important qualifier), we are loved by God independent of our growth as a Christian.

Yet all of the above approaches to growth are incomplete and, at some level, plain wrong. If we have the ability to overcome sin only through our own effort, then Jesus died for no reason. And our wounds are not our greatest problem – it’s our own sin. No wisdom of man can overcome that problem. And God clearly cares about our growth. In fact, Romans 8:29 says that he has predestined us to be conformed to the image of his son. Because sin causes so much suffering in us, it would be unloving of God to not care about our daily fight against sin. God loves us, and he wants us to grow and to experience victory in our fight against sin. In fact, the Bible says he wants us to be dead to sin (Romans 6:11).

So what then is the distinctly Christian model for how people change? One that is built around and upon the Gospel. Only the Gospel provides us with practical, effective and God-glorifying means to change. The Gospel is the good news concerning all that has been accomplished for you through the life, death, resurrection, ascension and ongoing reign of Jesus Christ and applied to you through the regenerating and indwelling work of the Holy Spirit. And because of the good news we have the heart and the means to be changed.

As disciple-makers we constantly toggle our conversations between Gospel need and Gospel provision. The fact that sin is our fundamental struggle in this life is our most basic Gospel need. It is sin that causes brokenness in us and chaos within the rest of creation. We lack any real power on our own to control our sin, just like we lack any real power to undue the futility that sin has caused in creation. The same dark force that makes you want to look at porn is also what causes tornadoes to rip through subdivisions and tsunamis to submerge islands. No part of the created realm has been untouched by sin. A disciple-maker is clear that the fight against sin is a spiritual battle that requires spiritual weapons. We cannot use our self-will to overcome sin.

For the person who does not have saving faith in Jesus Christ, who does not have the Spirit of God living in them, the greatest Gospel need is for conversion to occur. Any discussion of change which side-steps this most crucial need deprives a person of our greatest advocate (Christ) and the only means by which we can truly change (his grace). So a disciple-maker begins the change conversation with this fundamental need.

But believers also have an ongoing Gospel need. Yes, because of our faith in Christ, we have been brought from death to life and the Spirit of God now lives in us. We are no longer enemies of God, but have been reckoned righteous by the goodness of Christ himself. The Apostle Paul sums this up by declaring that because of the work of the Gospel we are now a “new creation” (2 Cor. 5:17). Yet, we still have old sin tendencies as well. The “flesh” still inhabits us and leads us astray. Believers, therefore, have not moved past their need for the Gospel. But many Christians struggle to see how the Gospel plays a practical role in their ongoing growth.

Here’s what I mean. Christians share a confessed hope that, after we die, on some glorious day in the future Christ will return and he will instantly bring our dead, decayed bodies back to life into a glorious state. We know it sounds far-fetched. But we believe it by faith and are certain it is true. If we don’t believe it, Paul says we are to be pitied the most. But IT IS TRUE!

So, knowing that we have already believed what may seem the hardest to believe, what if I were to tell you that the same Gospel which assures you of a bodily resurrection also promises you the means to fight against every day sin? Do you believe that is true in the same way you believe the resurrection is true? Sadly, too many Christians would say that the God who resurrects dead bodies offers no practical help with porn, broken marriages, anger, alcohol abuse, etc.

But what does scripture say about God’s willingness to meet your Gospel need to fight against sin? Paul writes this is in Ephesians 1:19-20:

“and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places.”

Paul is telling us that the same power that resurrected Jesus and vindicated him before God and seated him at God’s right hand is now available to us. The power of God, his grace, brings the dead back to life and enables the believer to fight against sin and to grow up into the image of our savior. God graciously meets our Gospel need with Gospel provision. As disciple-makers, that is the primary content of our proclamation. “Your needs have been met in Christ Jesus – all of them.” Denying that truth leads to sin.

Fundamentally, our role as disciple-makers is not to be a life coach or a therapist; it is to be evangelists. We share the good news with those who have never heard it, but we also remind those who have received it that they must never move on from it. We must stress the need to repent of all of our ways that we reject God’s promises to us and to once again have faith that all we need for life and godliness has been given to us in Christ (2 Peter 1:3).

That is how people really change. And that glorifies God.

I am incredibly excited to announce that Gospel-Centered Discipleship ( has published Renew: How the Gospel Makes Us New. I have worked on this book over the past two years, hoping to capture the Gospel principles that have been so important in my own journey of faith and with so many others I have walked alongside. The book is soaked in scripture reading and includes discussion questions and a journal for personal application of the principles. Lent, Gospel Need & Gospel Provision

“For you are dust and to dust you shall return.”

These are some of the most sorrowful words recorded in scripture. They were spoken by God to Adam and Eve in Genesis 3:19 following their disobedience and fall into a state of sin. God had made Adam from the dust of the ground (Gen. 2:7), and it was God’s preserving grace that kept Adam from turning back into dust. Now, because of sin, God withdrew that preserving grace causing Adam and Eve to one day die. And, because you and I are “in Adam”, we too will eventually die (1 Cor. 15:22).  That is the tragedy of the Fall – we were meant to live with God and one another forever, but sin robbed us of that.

When God pronounced curses on Adam, Eve and the rest of creation, he was vindicating his holiness and declaring that sin must not go unpunished. But God’s judgement was also gracious to Adam and Eve (and us!) because it taught them that sin was destructive to God’s created purposes and therefore harmful, especially to them. By seeing sin as something that is offensive to God and harmful to us, it makes us hate sin and desire something better.

Embedded in the curses of Genesis are promises of something that is better – the Gospel. In Genesis 3:15 God says to the serpent that he will put enmity between the offspring of the woman and the offspring of the serpent and that “he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.” This is a foreshadowing of Christ’s battle with Satan and his ultimate victory over him. But we also see in verse 21 a hint of the price of that victory. God made clothes for Adam and Eve using animal skins to comfort them in their shame. Animals had to die because of their sin. This points to the death of Christ on the cross whose blood atones for our sin and covers over it. Our redemption from sin came at the awful price of the Son of God’s life because “without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins” (Hebrews 9:22).

It is for our good that we regularly look at the reality of sin in our lives and all the havoc it wrecks on us and in the world.  It reminds us of our need for the Gospel. That is the purpose behind Lent, the forty-day period (excluding Sundays) leading up to Easter.

During Lent, we spend a season examining ourselves and confessing the sin that we find there. We don’t do this to shame ourselves before God or to somehow motivate ourselves to behave better. Looking at our sin is the first step toward repenting of it and embracing the grace of Jesus. A season of staring at our sin during Lent ensures that when we come to Good Friday our hearts will cry out “Worthy is the lamb who was slain!” In being reminded of death at work in us because of sin, we see the empty tomb on Easter as a promise that our dead bodies will one day be resurrected into something glorious. Lent screams out “we need the Gospel!” Good Friday and Easter assure us that we have indeed received the Gospel.

The slow march toward Holy Week begins today, on Ash Wednesday. It is a worship service focused on a time of examination, confession, mourning and hope. The mourning is expressed in the ashes we will wear on our forehead, in being reminded of that awful curse – “we are made of dust and to dust we shall return.” But we do not mourn as those without hope. In receiving the assurance of pardon for our sins and celebration of sacred communion, we are also reminded that we are children of the resurrection who have received Good News. Because of all that has been done for us in Christ Jesus, the curse has been lifted and we are now being made new.
